Angel Fire – Elliot Barker Trail

Had a couple of nice days hiking in Northern New Mexico in Angel Fire.  Angel Fire is a resort town of about 1,200 full-time residents nestled in the Moreno Valley of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range.  It’s a great place to enjoy the outdoors all year long.  In the winter, downhill skiing and in the summer, golfing, mountain biking, and hiking.

The Elliot Barker trail complex has a few different options for exploring the Moreno Valley area.  We chose trail #1, which is a loop trail about 5.5 miles long.  The trails are open all year, but hiking is best April through October.

Shadow had a great time taking a dip in the pond, and tramping through every available water source.  Needless to say, he was a happy, but muddy mess.

We also got lucky and saw some elk on our hike.  Didn’t get a picture of them at the time, they were a little too quick.  Got lucky again the next day, when a small herd came through the yard.  This one is just a youngster.  Much smaller then his parents.
