Munich, Germany – Dachau, BMW, and Beer Gardens

After Salzburg, we headed back to Munich to meet up with the rest of the family again. Our GPS earned a gold star that day. There was a backup at the border between Austria and Germany. The GPS took us on city streets and directed us to enter the autobahn right after the backup.

Our first stop was actually in Dachau, the memorial site of the former concentration camp. It was a very sobering visit, but one that we thought was really worthwhile and a reminder to never let these atrocities happen again.

Then it was on to BMW Welt. Yes the world of BMW to pick up our new car. (OK, no new car for us, but other people were picking up theirs.) Anyway, it was fun to see their new models and the concept cars. Will was like a little kid in a candy store.

Then next couple of days in Munich were fairly low key. We visited a couple of the beer gardens including the infamous Hofbrauhaus.

We went to the German museum; walked around and checked out a few of the sites like the Glockenspiel and the river surfers.

We also went by one of the White Rose memorials. The White Rose was a group of students that would pass out leaflets against the Nazis. The members were arrested and beheaded in 1943.

And we took back our rental car. Just a note, in Germany when bringing back a rental car, be prepared for a thorough inspection. I honestly felt that I should be standing at attention as they were doing a scratch and dent check. Anyway, we passed and turned in our car.
