Tallinn, Estonia – A Little Medieval with a Side of Humor

Got to Tallinn and found our accommodations after a hot and grueling walk from the ferry terminal. We were staying in a place right by the old city walls. Tallinn is the capital city of Estonia and the old town area still has cobblestone streets and most of the protective surrounding city walls.

We headed out the next day, the first stop was Fat Margaret. It is the city’s maritime museum. We had gotten the Tallinn card that includes entry to a number of museums and other sites throughout the city for free or a discounted fee. We beat our feet up on the cobble stone streets, managed to pack a lot in.

We also went to the Estonian History Museum/Great Guild Hall.

Made a stop at the oldest cafe in Tallinn from 1864. The Cafe Maiasmokk is known for their decorating of marzipan.

And the KGB Prison Cells.

The Dominican Convent from 1246 is one of the oldest buildings in Tallinn and the site of a former monastery.

The Hellemann Tower and Town Walls – where you can climb up the stairs to walk along the defensive walls.

We found a number of areas like this with Estonia showing its support for Ukraine.

And our last stop on that day’s tour was the Kiek in de Kok Fortification Museum. This museum includes 4 medieval towers with exhibits explaining the history of Tallinn’s defenses.

Part of the Fortification Museum are the Bastion Passages. These passages were built in the 17th and 18th centuries and were used to hide movements made by the military. Since that time, they were used as war defense and nuclear fallout shelters. The homeless people took them over as a place to live in the 1990’s.

Some other interesting things we found walking around.

That night we had dinner reservations at the Peppersack. We went on a night where they have a sword fight show. It was fun. We were also surprised it wasn’t that expensive for what is most definitely a tourist spot. Plus the food was really good.

We walked around and found a couple of great overlooks and had a nice sunset.
