Sitting Bull Falls and Oliver Lee State Park

Today dawned another cold and foggy day, can’t seem to get rid of the cloud cover hanging over the Carlsbad area.  We had planned to check out the Sitting Bull Falls recreation area in spite of the weather.  This area is managed by the US Forest Service and neither Will nor myself had heard of this place before.

Well, we drove down about 40 miles, the skies cleared and the weather was beautiful.  This place is another oasis in the desert with a waterfall and lush green plants. We did most of the Sitting Bull Falls trail as again, we had a tight time schedule and couldn’t do the whole 4.8 miles.  It was a nice trail.  This area was heavily damaged by a fire in 2011, so, there is not a lot of shade in some areas.  But down by the spring the fall colors were beautiful and Shadow enjoyed jumping in the water at every opportunity.

The waterfall itself is easy to access via the concrete path and platform overlook.  The area also has a number of shaded picnic areas.  Really a surprise how nice this area is and only a $5/car fee.  It was then time to pack up and head to our next home.

We got a spot at the Oliver Lee State Park.  This park is located outside Alamogordo.  We managed to get set-up just in time to watch the sun set with an awesome view from site.

We waited for this guy to move out first.
