We started our Peruvian journey by flying into Lima. Lima is the capital city of Peru and the metro area has a population of 10 million. We stayed at the Insights Hostel Peru. It was a very sparse room, but had everything we needed, including a private bath. For $22/night, who can complain. Also great airport pickup service. The driver was waiting for us when we arrived and whisked us away to the hostel.
Since we only had an overnight in Lima, just opted to take a walk around the hostel. Found some interesting things on our walk, we checked out the local Mega mart. In there, you can get anything from new tires for your mototaxi, new appliances, or your weekly groceries. Further down the road found one of the local markets. This is where locals have stalls selling everything from fresh chickens, complete with feet and organs, to dog and cat food. Need your shoes repaired, there’s a cobbler available. Want a bite to eat look no further, there were many stalls offering cerviche and other Peruvian delights.
What we also noticed was the construction techniques used in Lima. Buildings appear to never be finished. On the top floor they leave the rebar sticking out of the building’s structural posts. It appears they do that to be able to add another floor to the building in the future. Until another story is added, most people seem to use the space as a roof top deck.
