Florence, Italy – Rosario, the car that could?

I started today by climbing the cupola of the Duomo di Firenze (Florence’s Cathedral).  This Cathedral was started in 1296 and is most noted because of it’s large dome over the main cathedral.  The dome remains the largest brick dome ever constructed. Unfortunately, both Will and Lorraine didn’t want to join me in climbing the close to 500 steps to get some great views of Florence. The steps are narrow and get steeper as you climb up.  Glad I signed up for the first time slot as it also gets more crowded throughout the day. In places you must wait for the others coming up while you are trying to get down.

Us with Rosario

Look at the complexity of that dash!

We were then scheduled for a Fiat 500 tour.  These cars are the vintage variety from the 1950 and 60’s. Our guide referred to the 500 as a can of tuna.  After a quick driving lesson on their private road, Will was a master at the double clutch.  Our little gem for the afternoon was named Rosario. She has a powerful 16hp engine. Going downhill with the wind at our backs we approached top speeds of 60km/37mph. It was a beautiful day and great to see some of the Tuscan country side.  It was truly postcard worthy views through wine country.

After our drive, our tour included a picnic with wine and hors d’oeuvres.  Everyone else in our group had booked the wine tasting.  So, we had a lovely spread with just us three and our guide Mattia. All the food and wine had been made on the estate.  Really was a farm to table experience.

Then a quick stop at the oldest pharmacy in the world, the Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy.  It was established in 1221 by Dominican monks.  It is now a perfume store that still uses some of the original recipes from the 1200’s.

We also were able to try that famous Florentine steak.  Mmmm
