Motorhoming on the Ring Road with Fifi – Day 1

This time we were off to Iceland. The first-stop on our Nordic adventure. Our flight arrived a little late, but we knew we’d have to wait a little while for our friend Dan. He faced a number of flight delays, maintenance issues, weather and still was only a few hours late. Got our ride and off we went to pickup our home for the next 9 days. We were renting a motor home to drive around the Ring Road. The Ring Road circles around the country and for the most part remains fairly close to the coast.

After a stop at the Bonus grocery store, we set off for our first attraction. We planned on doing half of the Golden Circle and then continue counter clockwise around the Ring Road, in the coming days.

First stop Kerið Crater, this crater is a volcanic crater lake. It’s 180ft deep, 885ft across, and 567ft wide. Nobody was up for the walk around the crater, but we did walk down to the beautiful blue water.

Then it was on to the Geysirs. We get our word geyser from the Icelandic word geysir meaning to gush. So, it makes sense. We seemed to never be ready when the bigger eruptions happened, but caught a couple of smaller spurts. There was a little cafe at the visitor center and since we were hungry, we had our first taste of Icelandic food.

Our next stop was our first official waterfall of the trip, Gullfoss. Quite high and fun to look at. And the water was powerful.

Can’t believe we made it through the day with our jet lag. Dan did take over the driving for a bit as we made our way to the first campground of many. Selfoss Campground is right in the town of Selfoss and right off the Ring Road.
