As we wound down our last few days in Peru, we found ourselves back in Lima. This time we stepped up the accommodations and stayed at the Doubletree. This hotel had a great breakfast buffet. Real Bacon, people! And gluten-free bread. It was the first time I got to eat bread in Peru. (I had a few quinoa pancakes, but no one seems to tackle bread.) It was almost, as if, we were back in the US. The hotel is in the Miraflores area of Lima, one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Peru.

We took a city tour and got to check out the catacombs under the San Francisco Church. There seem to be a couple of theories behind the artfully arranged bones. Our guide had told us that because of an earthquake the catacombs ended up in disarray and to provide some order the like bones were placed together. Another story that I heard, is that it was the job of the monks when the body has decomposed to put the like bones together. Either way, don’t think I’d want that job.

That night we went to the Park of the Reserve in downtown Lima. This park was built in honor of the last soldiers who fought in the Battle of San Juan and Chorrillos, and the Battle of Miraflores. This park was renovated in 2007 and is now home to the El Circuito Mágico del Agua. It’s made up of 13 fountains. The fountains are lighted at night and there is even a music and laser show. One of the guys in our group decided to test the timing of one of the fountains and lost. He was soaked for the rest of the night.

By Peru, had a great time!
